Through the club website I have found a great deal of information about several Greens mowers. But I am looking for some background on the 12 inch Greens Popular. Could anyone let me know which years this was in production please? Mine which I am restoring has the number 61412 on the frame, if that helps to date it?

The Greens popular, an interesting mower, not that many seen, from the information I have the first model was being sold in 1928, 10,12 & 14in this would have had smooth cast rear roller & a cast scraper plate with the mowers name, whilst all Greens mowers had serial numbers, we have not completed a great deal of research on the numberings as we have with the Silens Messor, so unable to date from the number you have.

A 'Popular II' was being advertised in 1938 12in only, this had grooved rear roller & flat metal handles, no lettering & enclosed chain.

I am assuming you have the earlier model, I do have an original parts list & directions for use.

Some photographs would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, I attach photos of the mower as you describe, with smooth roller and nameplate. It works well and gives a good cut. A friend is turning new wooden handles and rollers as these were wormy, and I'm not sure how much more to do to it beyond a good clean and service.

Thanks for the image, it would appear the chain & sprockets have been replaced with a later roller chain, originally it would have had a block chain & cast open spoked large sprocket similar to the Silens Messor's & Multum in Parvo's. This was often the easiest way to keep a mower going when the old sprocket or chain broke & replacements were not available, I have seen several SM's where this has been done in a similar manner.

If it works well don't tempt fate and mess about with it too much. With your new handles and rollers and your suggested good clean and service, leave it at that. What you will have is an interesting, relatively uncommon, usable machine, looking it's age of around ninety years. What more could you want.
