Qualcast 35s mower - no spark

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

hello there,

my dad has a Qualcast 35s petrol mower and has a problem - no spark!

he's had the mower from new for almost 20 years and enjoyed almost trouble free mowing - til now!

working back, he's changed the spark plug, and now is looking to change the ignition coil - however, we cannot pin the thing down.

we cannot find an engine serial number or specific type but so far we've determined that the engine is a tecumseh AQ148 E-45520E.

there are lots of coils out there on ebay amazon etc. with part numbers which we can't relate to our engine.

i've attached a few pictures which may help

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

It is an AQ148. Before you condemn the coil unplug the green kill wire from the coil - if it’s the same as the one that I have, it’s just a push on “ Lucar” type connector and try again. Just be aware the with that wire disconnected it will have to be stopped with the choke or pulling the plug lead off.

EDIT    I believe that the ignition coil that you may need is part number 14160034 - but check !

Hi @Wristpin,

many thanks for your advice - now fitted the right coil and the mower is up and running again.

do you (or anyone else out there) have a manual for the mower/engine? my Dad only has the leaflet which came with the mower almost 20 years ago.

best regards

pete

One for the engine is a bit tricky as Tecumseh tended to publish a three inch thick book covering all their engines but not one section per model but a section per system covering all models eg compression, carburettors, ignition and charging systems etc etc. These would be a dealer only publication. There were a few aftermarket publications. I think that Haynes did one and there were baritone American small engine books. Try Amazon.

As far as the chassis goes, every machine came with an owner’s manual covering lubrication and adjustments etc, so there are plenty around. Have you looked in the manuals section on this site ?

thanks again for your reply. i have indeed looked on the site - alas nothing for the 35s or the engine. if i get my hands on one i'll post it to the site.
