Re-engining a Suffolk Punch 30s

Hi ,

I, like many others, have a Suffolk Punch 30S lawnmower which I have had from new in the early 1990s.  I did a complete engine strip down 10 years ago and although all the parts were in remarkably good condition, if I were to obtain a spare secondhand engine (mine is an A114 - aluminium head 114 cc) would a larger engine fit without undertaking any modifications. Does anyone know which engines would be compatible with this mower.  Incidentally when working on the engine 10 years ago the crankcase breather filter had completely perished and I could not find a replacement.  In the end I found some petrol and oil resistant foam from an aquarium supplies company which looked remarkably similar to that which was used originally and I cut the foam to fit the breather and this has proved a very serviceable solution.

I would think that the 114cc lump is more than adequate for a 12” mower. Think back to the original cast iron chassis 14” Punches that performed perfectly well with the SIF 75cc cast iron blocked engine.

If you really want a change have a look at what Loncin have to offer. The footprint should be the same but check out the crank diameter and height.
