Dennis 24 inch cut mower

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

I've just acquired a Dennis lawn mower with seat roller.
Is their any resources regarding dating? Plate on the side  says 273 Z and the seat is a spring assembly with wooden sides.

I seem to recall someone here has knowledge re dates .

A photo or 2 always helps

Bit of general info on dennisuk.com. If its the model with the 2 clutch levers and started by handle they are real quality

Hoover Sun, 23/08/2020

It's exactly the same as in the advert and yes it does have the two clutch levers with the Dennis name picked out in gold with a black surround

All the other bits are in the shed at the moment but seem to be all there. It's a round tank one

That looks very good and original . With the remains of the pin stripes remaining I would just oil the paintwork .The engines are lovely with a unique sound. I hope you have a decent lawn for it

I was going to varnish the remaining paintwork to help protect it. I'm also going to build a lean to help keep the weather off

Perhaps a paintwork expert will advise re whether varnish is the way to go and if so, what varnish. I would be worried  that the varnish itself  might deteriorate to the detriment of the nice original paint.

The machine certainly deserves a weather proof enclosure but are you aware that there is provision to reposition the grass box to cover the engine?  Unless your enclosure is nice and dry it may be wise to remove the magneto for the winter and keep it indoors; in the airing cupboard with the welding rods is a good hibernation spot!

I use Owatrol to protect machinery. Seems to work for me and gives a little lustre to the paintwork.

wristpin Tue, 25/08/2020

Owarrol is undoubtedly good for certain applications, I use it as a non stick surface for cutting cylinder blades and throw plates but a bit too glossy for a machine like this Dennis.  IMO the oily rag is the way to go.

I have been using the grass box as a cover and I'll check out the product you recommend as I want to keep the paint as original as possible

I wonder if part of the frame number is missing. There are usually one or two numbers after the Z which will help identify the year built and, possibly, who it went to when new. Is the plate damaged? Any chance of identifying another digit or two?

Hi Hoover

Look no further,we have all the dating information on Dennis's and also carry many spares to include ones for the Bradbury engines and the FE & FEA Blackburne engines.

We also own all the ledgers for Automower and all their printing blocks.

Infact we house many artefacts in our library and cover most machines, all we need is a photo of your machine and tell us what is written on your machine plate if still there

Kind regards
