New toy - Ransomes Twenty Four

One of my neighbours has very kindly given me a Ransomes 24 mk2. Can anyone tell me approximately how old it is and what engine it is? The number on the side plate lists it as Reg'd No: FC668 and the engine is a Villers - engine number: F15/42/01/12449.

Had it running today, it drives but the cutters don't turn.

Thanks, Alec

Looks fairly original other than the position of exhaust muffler on the Villiers F15 engine. The muffler would have been vertical with a "tail pipe" exiting in the vicinity of the starter rope guide.

Manufactured, Late 60s - early 70s

The cutters are disengaged / engaged by the small lever just visible in one of your images just to the right of the triangular chain cover .

I see that it has the tow hitch; did you get the roller seat?

(Lawnmower left and right are always given from the operator's position.)

Thanks for the info. I tried the lever but the cutters still don't turn. Will investigate further as so far had a cursory glance, the mower has been sitting for a while so could be something siezed.

The muffler is a bit of a patchwork quilt, has undoubtedly seen more than one welding torch! Surprisingly quiet though.

Didn't come with a rolling seat.

Cheers

There is a dog clutch on the other end of the lever. If you are lucky it’s just stuck, if not it may have been run out of adjustment and suffered accordingly.
