I have come to the stage on the rebuild of my Atco lightweight 17” where I have to refit the kickstart spring and I cannot for the life of me see how it locates.I meticulously photographed all the other aspects of the dismantling process but not this bit for some reason,so how does it locate please?

Please post an image of the kickstart mechanism and one of the spring . I've not got any info on the Lightweight per se, but may be able to relate your set up to another model.

This is the best that I can find. If you have not repainted you may be able to find witness marks on the pedal arm and wherever the reaction leg of the spring rests - that appears to be the part described as the engine bearer.. From the drawing it appears that the coils of the spring fit over the same rod that the pedal pivots on and the hooked end hooks  under the arm. The leg of the spring then rests against the engine bearer (32822) to give a reaction against the downward movement of the pedal.

OK, on my 1247 the first 2 photos show how one end of the spring is attached to the kick start lever, and the third shows how the other end of the spring is captured underneath by the bolt.

Thanks for all the info, managed to see a groove worn in the pedal where the spring hook located and with the help of the photos figured out where the other end located, now to hurtle on to the next crisis!
