Webb 24" drive grease

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

I have another Webb 24" that I have rebuilt with new bearings and new (or good condition) drum drive pinion and gear.  I cleaned out the old grease and now I need to repack it with fresh grease.  Can I use a general purpose grease or does it need to be the black molybdenum grease for any specific reason.  Thanks for any advice available.

I cant recall ever seeing any specific recommendation for the grease and on the few occasions that we renewed the ring gear and pinion we just used a general purpose grease.  These days the manufacturers would possibly recommend some clever dry lubricant laced with PTFE  to avoid the dust plus grease equals grinding paste scenario.  Does your reference to black molybdenum grease mean that you have seen an official recommendation or is it just what you found had been used by the manufacturer or the last person in there?

Thank you Wristpin. I just saw that it has the heavy black grease as I have seen in a couple of others that I have stripped and I just wondered if the lighter GP grease would do the job without running out or being washed out.  Obviously doesn't sound like this will be a problem so thanks again.

I think that one of the issues with a heavy grease is that it tends to be pushed away from where it would do any good and to stay away - really a no win situation. I always thought that Webb could have made a bit more of an effort in providing better dust exclusion  than the edge of the ring gear just running against the inside of the chassis side plate. When I ran a 24 I drilled through from inside the chain case and fitted a grease nipple so that I could give it the occasional top up.
