Conundrum

I recently acquired this Ransomes 12 inch Patent Gear Automaton. The machine as you can see is in overall good condition. It's obviously been subject to a restoration some time ago. The woodwork is very good and the paintwork is very acceptable. However one of the gear covers has been replaced ( original probably lost )  with a very rusty one. Whilst the rust is only very stable, light and surface this cover does certainly not match the rest of the machine. The question is what to do ?  I obviously can't paint this cover in fresh paint as it will stick out as too new. Leaving it looks awful. Repainting the whole mower would spoil the overall nice look. I have already begged the question  of others who suggest I leave the cover off but just keep it.  I feel there would be no point in having the cover if it wasn't installed. Does anyone have any ideas to make this machine look complete without looking like a patchwork quilt ? Many thanks Sean

Very nice machine!

Very nice machine!

You could repaint the cover but “knock it back” to age the look in line with the rest of the mower.

Many thanks for the

Many thanks for the suggestion. By 'knock back' do you mean not giving such an even coat and not brushing out any imperfections - Or do you mean paint then 'scuff' it up a bit with wire and dirty oil ? Thanks

Hello – I’m no expert at this

Hello – I’m no expert at this but have I painted a section of mower that was in a similar state to yours and then rubbed it with a cloth to remove the shine/ newness of the paint with the aim to match it with the rest of the mower. A couple of scratch marks here and there to give the signs of age and usage should do the trick.
