Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers

Hello

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hello and hi to all who take the time to read this, as you can see im new to this web forum.

I’ve recently purchased an old lawnmower to restore and this looks like the best place for help and advice as im a complete novice in this area.

So.... i've got a Ransoms Matador Mk1 with a J.A.P model - 3 engine and Amal carburettor (with a kick start)

I plan to completely strip it down to bare parts, have all painted and alloy parts bead blasted and a fresh layer of Ransoms green, renew the ignition system and rebuild the carburettor.

Is there anywhere I could get literature on the mower to help me with my strip and rebuild?

Im also struggling to find and original pictures of what the mower should look like?

Any help greatly recieved

Hello Mat,

Welcome to the forum.

The lawnmower you describe sounds suspicously like one I owned until about six weeks or so ago. I sold it on eBay to a chap who said he was a gardener, he was going to renovate it to use on the lawn of the big house where he worked. I was rather surprised to see that he had relisted it on eBay more recently, using my original description word for word as well as my photo's !

When it left me the machine was complete and in original order, though had at some stage been repainted, at least in part, not of course in quite the correct shade of green. I sincerely hope you acquired it in the state it left me, and not a pile of bits !  It certainly has the potential to be a very useful and rewarding machine to use again. I don't suppose there are too many of them still in active service.

Good luck with the restoration and do keep us posted.

Regards,

Colin
