Ransomes Marquis failure to start

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hello everyone. I've got a new to me Ransomes Marquis Mark 4A with Villiers engine and Amal carb.

I started it this morning as per the manual and it fired up and ran - however slowly started to sputter and then just stopped running altogether.

I have tried restarting with the choke on, choke off and a mixture of throttle etc but just won't start.

Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome to the world of classic mowers.

Take the spark plug out and check for a spark at the electrodes. No spark there , remove the connector and check for a spark off the end of the HT lead. Spark there, try a new plug. No spark there will mean that at the least the contact breaker points need cleaning and adjusting . Possibly a failed condenser or worst case the coil.

If all is well in the sparks department, strip and clean the carburettor.

Is it even getting fuel delivery from the tank to carb? Plug wet or dry as a bone....or just pitch black

Sorry for the slow reply!

I ended up taking the carb off and cleaning it, out it back together and started straight away. I should have done that before posting here really...

Thanks
