Identification for 2 old lawnmover

Sorry that no one has been able to assist you in identifying your two old machines but I suspect that it will need "local" knowledge to produce an answer. That interesting design of cylinder barrel should be an easy clue for someone that knows.

If you manage to identify them perhaps you will post a bit about them on this Forum.

the machine in the first photo is a Qualcast 16, made in Birmingham in the late 1930s.

The machine in the second photo is made by excelsior motor cycles (I think it is called the monarch) and is a rare and sought after machine, unfortunately it appears to be missing its chain cover. Some examples that I have seen have twist grip throttles and twin port exhausts but it is not clear if your machine has these features, some links to excelsior mowers are:

Another feature of interest is the large tool box, mounted on the handles, from memory I think the fuel tanks was hidden in this, your machine also features an unusual fold out grassbox arrangement. Judging by the fact that the drive chain which comes off the engine is completely enclosed I would say that yours is probably  a slightly later model.

I have seen two different versions of the monarch, one version has a fold out grassbox, twist grip throttle, twin port exhaust and large tool box / fuel tank. The other version has an ordinary fuel tank, no tool box, single port exhaust and an ordinary throttle. both versions are illustrated in the aforementioned links

Just an observation, neither of the machines in your links appear to feature that "offset" cylinder barrel -  what engine would that be?

the engine on both machines appears to be a small 98 cc villiers 2-stroke.

I have had a look at the 2 mowers that I have which feature this engine, one is a qualcast 16 from the late 1930s, the cylinder barrel bears the letters:

the second mower is a 1933 Atco, the cyclinder barrel bears the inscription:

I belive it may have been called the midget, of the second generation, the earlier design is featured on the atco standard and the later design being on the 1950s Atco kick-starts, I'm not sure if all 3 were known as the midget or if midget was the official name at all.

So Villiers they are but not the same pattern as I have understood to be the Midget. I may have to have a re-think about the "Midgets" that I have as they certainly don't have that barrel configuration. They're burried fairly deep in the storage shed so it may be a day or two before I can have a close look. Also I've got several Atco Standards awaiting attention but I know that none of them feature that barrel.

yes, I have only seen the engine used on mowers, and only on those from the 1930s.

the only mowers I have seen it featured on are:

Qualcast 16

1933 Atco lightweight ( with "sliding" kick start)

1930s Atco lightweight, with tubular handle and ordinary kick start

Excelsior monarch

incidentally, the first link (http://www.oldlawnmowerclub.co.uk/moms/mom62-exc.htm), does feature the offset cylinder barrel.
