Ransomes 12" Ajax Mk 3

An old pal of mine, now aged 97, can no longer push his Ransomes Ajax lawn mower so I swapped him for a bottle of Glenmorangie.

The mower was fine when I brought it home but a couple of days later when I took it out to have a go something was jamming and it wouldn't move forwards.    I'm not sure whether it's the blade cylinder or the roller.    I checked the obvious things like catching on the fixed bottom blade and I took off the side panel but that didn't throw any light on the matter.    The roller turns backwards OK but as soon as I start to move forwards something locks.     I wondered if I might have disturbed something in transit which is now causing the jam.

Before I start taking it to pieces I thought it might be best to take some advice and possibly be offered a likely solution.    Any advice would be much appreciated and also anything that I should be wary of when taking it to bits.

Hello and welcome to the OLC forum.

Before resorting to serious dismantling try adjusting the contact between the cylinder and the bottom blade. If the cylinder is adjusted correctly it should just make light contact with the bottom blade over the entire length of the blade. this can be checked by trying to cut some paper.
