Ransomes Anglia restoration

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

I am fully restoring a Ransomes Anglia 1930, 99% stripped down but having trouble removing the cutting cylinder bearing from its housing, does the housing seperate in any way or do I need to try & slide the bearing off the shaft, or get the outer rim out of the housing? Is there a threaded end & nut on the end of shaft? A couple of balls have come out, if I damage the bearing further are there modern replacements that will fit. Can anyone please advise me.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Thanks

Clive

Hello Clive,

Re your bearing problem I have to say that I have not actually taken an Anglia apart yet,  but I would imagine that the bearing and its housing will pull off of the shaft with the aid of a two legged bearing puller, unless the bearing housing has a closed end in which case careful levering is the only choice, If a retaining nut or a circlip were used I would think that it would visible when looking from the end of the cylinder. The bearing may be held by some corrosion but please use care to avoid breaking anything. When the bearing housing is free of the shaft you should be able to identify the type of bearing used. The Ransomes Ajax model that followed the Anglia used a self aligning ball bearing and these are available from bearing suppliers, hopefully the Anglia will be similar.

Maybe another member out there can confirm my thoughts or put me straight if I have missed something.

Good luck with the restoration and feel free to post a picture or two.

Ray.

 Thanks Ray for your comments

It is a closed end, attempted again today, with success, open ended spanner as lever, vice & club hammer, I think the bearing saw what was coming & gave in! Housing now off & I should be able to now use a puller to take it off shaft, it does have a nut that was hidden in housing. Will try to squeeze the 3 balls back in to bearing.

This is the mower before I attacked & will post some more photo's as I progress.

Hello Clive,

If the bearing does turn out to be a self aligning one you will find that you can swivel the inner race out of the outer bearing,(this may be how they escaped)  this will allow you to replace the balls that fell out. If you clean the bearing carefully you may see two scallop shapes cut out of one side of the outer race of the bearing this would allow the inner race to be removed completely but be careful as you may find that you dislodge more of the balls.
