Ransomes Auto Certes bearing part query

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hi all.

This is a part query. I am servicing the cutting cassette on my ransomes Auto Certes as well as upgrading the knife to a shaver knife. Drive side bearing has play and needs replacement, at the same time I'll be replacing the engine side bearing on the cylinder. Could someone confirm the bearing type I'd need. I've spoken to a chap who deals with ransomes parts and he states the bearing I need is an RL5 bearing.

if anyone can please confirm this, that would be great.

Further to this, I don't know where to find one but I'm looking for a replacement starter cup for the flywheel as there's a large 1-1/2" chunk missing. the recoil starter grips without a problem after it's been serviced by a friend who knows the fiddly bits of that particular starter. the engine in question is a BSA sloper F12.

the starter cup has ribs to grip to the recoil starter teeth.

does anyone have a spare one laying around?

please drop me an email off list at turningbytouch@gmail.com.

Cheers.

Lew

Hello,

If the bearings on your mower are the self aligning type then they probably are RL5. Unless they are badly corroded they will most likely have the size etched onto the bearing somewhere.

The link will take you to a bearing company who may be helpful to you as the bearing is described well and sizes are listed to help confirm suitability

Re the starter cup I cannot help with that one.

Hi ray, cheers for that info.

Managed to strip the cassette down with a little difficulty. but it's done. The problem I have is removing the bearings from the holders. From what I understand of it. someone has welded the outer seals on (rather poor finish welds) so the bearings won't pop out. there also seems to be material inside which feels like foam. what in the name of heaven is going on here?

Will check this over with a friend in the same trade.

is there only 1 size RL5 bearing?

I suspect that the bearing shields have been welded because they have become slack and have lost their interference fit. If you grind off the welds they should then come off easily. Inside the covers you should find a felt washer that forms a seal to keep dirt from entering the bearing, followed by a plain steel washer to separate the felt seal from the bearing.

As far as I am aware there is only the one RL5 bearing but do check the sizes of your bearings against those quoted in the link that I posted.

I believe that spares for these mowers are still available from Ransomes dealers not sure of the costs though.

Hi ray, thanks for the warning. will get these bearings sorted out this coming week.

I'm really in the mood to find a rough cut mower or mulch mower to refurb and upgrade. anyone got a hauter or something like that they no longer want and would like a new home for?

RL5 is correct.

The beating is pushed right into the holder then there is a thin steel disc (LOY0012T) then the felt seal (A229401) Ransomes part numbers have changed over the years but any Ransomes agent will convert to current. The steel discs are expensive for what they are (about £4 at the last count) so you might try making them from suitable stock. The hole in the disc has to be big enough for the wide part of the shaft so that the shoulder of the shaft butts to the bearing and does not try to turn the disc itself.

Starter cup. These are actually smooth in side and it is the sharp edge of the expanding pawls that grip the soft alloy of the cup. For new cups try Meetens or Villiers Spares.

The welding on the bearing covers may not be to weld them to the holders but to shrink then to tighten them so before you grind this off take a good look. Running a bead of weld round and letting it cook id a well tried method of tightening things up. Also a useful dodge if you have an outer bearing track in a housing and no means of pulling it out. Run a good heavy bead round the inside of the track and it will usually shrink the outer race enough that it will drop out with a sharp tap on the vice.

hmmmmm

thanks for the info. now this gets me a little twitchy. not had to do this kind of bearing repair before. oh well no worries. won't take long. the welds in question there's 3 tack welds which leave a gap on the outer plate. so it's a question of cracking the welds. no worries there. the issue I have is getting the bearings and felt washers locally. I'm not exactly comfortable dealing with suppliers I don't know. so it's just one of those things.  I am hopefully due at the museum again the end of this month but that means holding a job up  for parts, sprays, etc. mind you, If it's refurbished in time then it can find a new home in July some point. it's just a little frustrating having a machine in my workshop which needs a bit of care and attention.

struck a problem and need to solve it pretty quickly. well... 2 problems.

1: bolt supporting blade sprocket was sheared off so had to remove it with heat, a grinder and pulling a tapered washer. So, the problem I have is now a missing bolt with the tapered end under the head and the washer supporting the sprocket. the sprocket, spring, drive parts, etc are fine and the cylinder is safe so no worries there. Does anyone have a spare washer and bolt that fit this cylinder?

2: on the clutch shaft, the bearing behind the sprocket has a little play and doesn't sound at it's best. does anyone know what bearing I need for this?

Good news. at last, bearings sorted. waiting for them to arrive next week. due to holidays, etc some companies I'm dealing with are closed til Monday. no worries though. A friend and fellow engineer has ordered the bearings and is resetting the casings for me, etc,]]this weekend it's machining work and finishing. so it's time for one of my new toys to come out.

On a more bearing related matter. from the drive shaft to the clutch, there's a bearing race fitted behind the sprocket. there's a small bit of play and doesn't sound particularly quiet which it should be smooth running. could someone advise on the bearing needed please? This could benefit from a reset either that or flood it with grease.

Cheers.
