Atco Villiers 14in roller dog clutch removal.

I'm restoring a 1957 14 inch Atco and am struggling to dismantle the dog clutch drive to the rear cylinder. There appears to be a type of lock washer behind the end nut but I'm not sure if all I have to do is bend back the tags. The solution will be obvious once I've done it I'm sure, but until then is anyone able to help?

Thank you very much. The diagram is just what I needed. You are right and it doesn't show a tab washer on the j299sleeve nut but there are some "ears"shown that prevent a socket from fully engaging the nut. It looks like I might be able to separate the clutch from the roller by undoing j 300 sleeve. I did wonder if there might be a left hand thread but haven't had the confidence to uSe a lot of force either way until I knew exactly how it was put together. I'll attack it again later. Once again thanks for your help.

Glad that the pic is of help. I can see the "ears" on the J299 on the pic - very odd, wonder if there was a special tool for undoing it, but why when a socket would do?!  Unless it was to discourage uninformed "diyers" damaging things by turning it the wrong way.

Not sure how reliable the drawing is but it goes through my mind that the J300 may be splined onto the roller shaft and not threaded so proceed with caution in trying to undo it!  My reasons for saying this are that Atco have used a similar design in the cylinder drive of the latter day 24 and Royale Machines and I have seen many instances of damage where  unwary but enthusiastic diy mechanics have put a socket and big bar on the hex sleeve and given it their all, twisting it beyond further use, when actually it just pulled off!

That said, it does look like in this application it may screw on to the roller shaft with a left hand thread so as to tighten in the direction of travel. Recently  spent a couple of "entertaining" hours removing a similarly mounted sprocket from a Ransomes Marquis - one needs  know how and  confidence!!!

Brilliant job done! The j299 wasn't that tight and undid with careful use of a tight fitting adjustable. You were also right about the j300 sleeve. It is a sliding fit but was very tight and I don't think I would have worked that out without your help. So many thanks once again, it's now completely dismantled.

Put that man on report!!!

Glad the info was of use.

Hmm but was it a metric or an imperial adjustable and was it used with the jaws facing the right direction?

Good to hear of your success dismantling the mower now all you have to do is remember how it all goes back together again, but then that is a job for another day.
