Hello All

Acquired a selection of mowers today, familiar with most of them, but this 'Made in England' sidweel 12" has no manufacturer. I know we have the various catalogue mowers that are badged but does anyone know who would have made this one & possible dating?

I have put some larger images on my websiite via this link.......................            http://www.vintagemowers.co.uk/page11.php

It has got rather ornate wooden rollers, am assuming they are original?

Thanks

Clive

Clive

I'm pretty sure this is a Follows & Bate machine. A while back (2005) we produced an article in Grassbox 53 about using patent numbers via the Patent Office website to identify machines, or at least get a pretty good idea of manufacturer.

http://www.ipo.gov.uk

As part of that article one of the examples I used turned out to be a Follows & Bate machine very much like the one in your photos. A search on the IPO website suggested that the patentees were living and working in Manchester (ie the same city as F&B) at the time. A member of the club then confirmed the same patent numbers were on a Follows & Bate "Magic" machine in his collection.

Why not have go on the IPO website with patent numbers from the wheels and see what comes up?

Hi Keith

Thanks for that, yes interesting article. Whilst searching the patents I also came across the Follows & Bates Marmalade orange cutter where the patent had been applied for by the same 2 chaps who applied for the 2 patents mentioned on my mower, so happy now that I have added a F & B to my collection.

Cheers for now
