Shanks Golf Lynx 16"

I've just been fortunate enough to add one of these to my collection and I know next to nothing about it. It looks like the Silver Comet's big brother but is clearly built to a much higher spec and sports a 12 knife reel, so was for the fine turf market.

The ever resourceful Clive has found a 1939 ad which lists the 16" at £16 (a 14" machine was also available at £15), so we have a date and pricing. Using a rudimentary inflation calculator cross referenced with wages of the time, we are looking at a very highly priced mower, possibly in excess of £700 at today's prices.

Clive also provided a PDF to a magazine article which refers to the Golf Lynx as comparable to the Certes and SM Deluxe.

Despite the appalling pun of the mower's name, it seems to be missing in the history books, so if anyone has any more information I would be delighted to have it.

My example seems to be in pretty good shape and I look forward to giving it a turn in the spring.

Thanks, of course, to Clive for his help so far.

Joe

An excellent find. I'll look forward to seeing some images in due course.

I've been looking through some paperwork and the earliest reference I can find to the Golf Lynx is 1937 although the Lynx was made from at least 1931. The earlier machines did not have "Golf" in the name although it's clear from the adverts I have seen that they were intended for golf courses. The design was slightly different, as can be seen from this 1931 advert.

The first reference I can find to a "Golf Lynx" is 1937 and the latest is for 1954 when the price had risen to £37-6-3. By this time the mower had tubular "pram" looped handles although the body appears to be the same as the 1930s design. The following image is a 1938 advert.

Keith,

many thanks for that, the adverts and dates are very handy. My example sports the looped handles so will be a later model.

I will get some photos taken later in the week.

Thanks again,

Joe

There we go! It'll be better once I've given it a clean down, but I do like the one of it next to the Silver Comet.
