Webb 24 grease nipples

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

I just went to grease my recently acquired villiers engined Webb 24, and found that the grease nipple heads are too small for my grease gun, anyone know if I can get a different connector for the gun, or what thread the nipples are so I can replace them?
Any advice appreciated!

Hi,

I would think that the nipples that you have found are possibly round nipples to fit an oil gun. The link to Cromwell Tools shows a pointed grease gun fitting that will allow you to apply grease into this type of nipple by engaging in the hole that the grease passes through. This type of adapter is also needed for grease nipples that are set in to rear rollers where normal fittings will become jammed.

I think that the thread will be 1/8bsp but I don't have any reference material to back this!

I also believe that the nipples on your Webb may be the  "straight" type without the ball end for the connector  jaws to grip. Ransomes also used these to a late date.  Straight adaptors/connectors  used to be readily available but now  probably only from a specialist tool shop or classic car supplier. I have one grease gun permanently fitted with one to save having to swap adaptors/connectors.

On a slightly different tack there is an old but useful trick for getting grease or oil into a worn or difficult to line up on nipple. Take a piece of clean linen rag and place over the nipple and then push the connector on over the top. The rag seals the connector to the nipple but the grease or oil can pass through it.

Cheers for the replies guys, I'll order some 1/8 bsp nipples and see if I can swap them over, they do look like ordinary ball end nipples, just small. Will there be nipples in the rear roller? It figures, but I haven't noticed any.

Hi, I think you would be wise to verify the size of the thread on the existing nipples before ordering replacements, there are likely to be several thread forms that have been used on grease nipples including no thread at all. I have seen nipples that are just pressed into place.

It may be easier to purchase the pointed adaptor for use on your grease gun, I can assure you that they do work ok.

Only two nipples  on the old belt driven 24. One on each cutting cylinder bearing but after serial number 271-5882 there is an additional one on the outer end of the drive shaft bearing  just inboard of the double pulley and accessed through a cut-out in shaft shield.

Guess that on a Villiers engined machine you will have the original "two piece" cylinder bearing supports where the cast bearing holder is riveted to the arm. These had a habit of working loose making cylinder adjustment a bit hit and miss. We used to braze them up to eliminate movement.
