JP Push Mower Model enquiry request
Hi.
As a new member I am hoping that someone in the club may be able to help me identify the Model Type and hopefully year of manufacture of a JP Mower I bought yesterday. I have attached photos to help? The Cutter and one piece Roller measure 10" in width.
Will really appreciate any help you can offer.
Regards.

Thanks Wristpin, I intend to dismantle the mower at the weekend so I am hoping there may be markings/stamp that will give me an answer. Regards.Rob

No problem, Rob.
No problem, Rob. It's a bit of a song and dance effort to upload images to this site, and you're not the first one to encounter difficulty with it.

I think it is a 'minor', the 'maxees' had a lift out cutter unit, it also the wrong colour (aren't they always)
Depending on whether it is a mk1, it should be a darker green, or if it is a mk2, an olive green.

Hi hortimech. Thanks for your thoughts on the model type. I intend to get the mower restored/serviced and then I shall be using it so to get the info on the paint colours was much appreciated. Regards Rob
Evening,
Evening,
Looks like a JP Minor Mk2, I believe the Mk1 had a chevron cutting cylinder & rather nice alloy chain cover & ornate alloy casting on opposite side with the word 'Minor'.
Most JP's have a serial number, on this model it may be stamped in to the steel side plates, from this we should be able to determine the exact age.
I do have a copy of the instruction book for the Mk2 if needed.
Me again, can I just add
Me again, can I just add that as far as I'm aware the front roller would have had 3 separate sections, I assume the one fitted is an incorrect replacement when it was last restored, the parts list only details the smaller rollers. The only roller mower that springs to mind having a one piece front roller at manufacture is the Ajax Mk1, but please correct me if anyone knows of any others.

Hi Clive1997. Thanks for the information on what model type you think my mower might be along with the info on the Wooden Roller type, much appreciated. Regards. Rob

Hi hortimech. Took the side cover of the mower today. Phot attached of the original colour found inside the cover plate. Thanks again for the information. Much appreciated. Regards. Rob

An update for those who may have followed this thread, Rob has found the serial number and we have identified the machine, Its a JP Mini-Mower made in May 1963, he now has copy of instruction book, images of an original mini-mower as below, plus link to the transfers for the mini-mower that the club supplies, note 2 x wooden front rollers separated by a short metal spacer.
Rob, if you are looking to fully restore the mower, be good to see some images here of the finished project.

Hi Clive 1997. Thanks very much for all your help and for the photos of how the mower should look, much appreciated. Anyone else reading the thread that helped me with my enquiry BIG THANKS, much appreciated. I shall post some photos of the mower on the site when I get it sorted. Thanks again. Rob
A very interesting thread as
A very interesting thread as I have,as yet, an unidentified JP mower myself. Did you finish restoring this example?
Hi Triumph66. After I
Hi Triumph66. After I acquired the Mini Mower I decided to get a few more old push mowers for comparison purposes, Ransomes Ajax 5, Webb Witch, 2 Green's Zephyr's a 12" and a 14" and a JP Maxees fully intending to just keep the one I preferred best. A neighbour had the Ajax 5 off me but I still have the other mowers and alternate the lawn cutting with each of them. The restoration of the Mini Mower only got as far as getting the Grass Box sand blasted and a coat of paint put on it along with a mechanical overhaul and sharpen however, I have a big birthday coming up soon and my wife asked what I would like as a gift and so she is getting the Mini Mower professionally restored/renovated for me. Look forward to seeing how you get on with your Maxees project. Regards. Rob
Rob,
Rob,
Sounds like a great and practical birthday present. Actually, my plan is not too dissimilar to yours by having 3 push cylinder mowers and alternate them to mow my lawn. At the moment I got an unidentified JP mower but a Ransommes Ajax MK 3 would be good to have as well. The third one I have yet to decide but maybe a Greens mower of similar quality. Which one to you prefer using out of interest?
Regards
Andrew
Interesting, never had a real
Interesting, never had a real mower as a birthday present from others, only mower related bits & pieces, mugs, 'T' shirts etc! although I must admit I have treated myself to several, birthday being a good excuse.
How about a Greens Zephyr as your next mower? I have just put one on ebay all adjusters in place & good grass box

Hi Andrew. I like using all
Hi Andrew. I like using all the mowers I have but for me personally my Webb Witch would be my first choice with all the others a very, very close 2nd. You mention possibly acquiring a Green's mower, well, I am pleased with the results from both my 12" and 14" Zephyr models. Currently looking for a Grass Box for the 14" Zephyr (see Classified Ads - Wanted). Cheers. Rob
Hi Clive. Saw your Zephyr on
Hi Clive. Saw your Zephyr on E Bay last night but already have 2 Green's Zephyr's(see photos) but thanks for letting me know about yours. Currently working on getting the wife to pay for a book I have on pre-order which comes out at the end of the month apparently !!!. Cheers. Regards. Rob
Excellent job you have done
Excellent job you have done on that, I was really aiming at Andrew with the Zephyr!
But I've still got lots of others to tempt you with!
Clive, that Greens mower
Clive, that Greens mower looks very interesting and tempting......
Rob, that's very interesting feedback as my impression is that the Webb mower was the poor man's Rolls Royce of lawnmowers. I used a petrol driven Webb mower and it was a joy to use but was replaced by a new Dennis mower to mow the croquet lawn at Castle Drogo. You have done a superb job on those Greens mowers by the way.
I have attached photos to
Unfortunately not !
