JOHN FERRABEE, PHOENIX IRON WORKS,
NEAR STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE,
MILLWRIGHT, ENGINEER, MACHINIST, IRON AND BRASS FOUNDER, AND MANUFACTURER OF AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY.
Descriptive and Price List of Agricultural Machinery delivered free of charge for carriage, fifteen miles from the works, and at Bristol.
IMPROVED HAND THRASHING MACHINE. This machine is constructed on a very simple principle, and in a superior style of workmanship; the frame, drum, concave, &c. being of iron, it is both compact and durable, and as there are but few wearing parts, it is not liable to get out of order. On the drum are fixed six wrought iron beaters, formed so as to thoroughly thrash out the corn, without injuring the straw; the concave is regulated for the different kinds of grain by an eccentric movement with an index, which maintains it parallel to the drum, without the possibility of their being placed too nearly in contact, and admits of instant adjustment, while the machine is in motion; self-feeding oil cups are attached to the bearings of the drum spindle, to economize oil, and prevent the brasses from wearing. Five persons are usually employed to work it: viz., two to turn, one to hand the sheaves, one to feed, and one to remove the straw; when thus put into operation, the reports of parties who use and approve machines of this kind, give an average effective performance of 40 bushels of wheat a day. It may also be driven by horse or other power, with! one horse, from sixty to seventy bushels of wheat a day, may be thrashed out. Price, £16; delivered in London, £16 12s. Ditto, mounted on wheels with shafts for travelling, £20; delivered in London, £20 16s.
Ditto, with a one horse power, all mounted for travelling, and a loading jack £35; delivered in London, £36 10s.
A PORTABLE TWO HORSE POWER THRASHING MACHINE, on one pair of wheels, £40; delivered in London, £42.
A PORTABLE THREE HORSE POWER THRASHING MACHINE, on one pair of wheels, £45: delivered in London, £47 5s.
Ditto, with the Thrashing part on a separate travelling carriage, £50; delivered in London, £53.
A PORTABLE FOUR HORSE POWER THRASHING MACHINE, the thrashing part on a separate travelling carriage, £55 delivered in London, £58 10s.
The foregoing horse machines are on the same principle as the hand machine, but of larger dimensions, and strength proportionate to the power applied to them; they may be driven from either side, and are fitted with rachet [sic] coupling boxes to prevent the machinery overrunning the horses when they stop, and are also furnished with spacious platforms, surrounded by high fencing, that loose ears may not fall over; they are easily set to work and may be loaded and unloaded without difficulty; an improved jack for that purpose accompanying each. The horse geering [sic] is on the most approved plan and made very strong, with stages for the horses to walk over, and the speeds are regulated for them to go 2½ miles an hour, when the drum is at its proper velocity. Chaff cutting or other machines may also be attached to them.
A PORTABLE THRASHING MACHINE for bolting, made an extra width and delivers the straw quite smooth and straight, which is of great importance when required for sale or particular purposes, it may be connected to the three or four horse power, £22; delivered in London, £23.
A Two HORSE POWER for driving thrashing and other machinery, with oak or iron frames, £15 15s.; delivered in London, £17.
Ditto, with wheels and shafts, and a loading jack, £21 10s.; delivered in London, £23.

A SMALL CHAFF-CUTTING MACHINE, made entirely of metal, with two knives, cutting one length only, suited for small stables. Price, £4 10s., in London, £4 16s.
AN IMPROVED CHAFF-CUTTING MACHINE, constructed entirely of metal, with two knives fixed on the fly-wheel, and adapted to cut ¼, ½, ¾, and 1 inch lengths. It is a very powerful and complete machine, having an improved arrangement to tightly compress the material while it is being cut, and to relieve it while it is advancing, which obviates all liability to clog or choke, and a new and simple method of readily varying the length; it cuts in the most efficient manner, is easily sharpened, and may be worked by one or two men at the handles, or applied to horse or other power. Price, £11., in London, £11 10s.
A LARGE CHAFF-CUTTING MACHINE, to be driven by horse, steam, or water power, made entirely of metal, with three knives, and adapted to cut from ¼ of an inch to 1½ inch lengths; it has an improved mouth arrangement, and is suitable for establishments requiring large quantities of chaff. Price, £14., in London, £15.
THE CULTIVATOR. - This is deemed by eminent agriculturists one of the most valuable implements now manufactured. It is peculiarly adapted and may be advantageously used for cultivating land under all circumstances where fine and deep tillage is essential, without turning down the surface, which may be effectually accomplished by it much more economically and expeditiously than by the ordinary methods. The general purposes for which it is especially applicable, are to grub up fallow or turnip land that has been eaten out being liable to clog from its coiling off by sheep; to clean bean, wheat, and round the spindle or axles. The rakes pea stubbles; and to pare seed lands, &c., are fitted to strong springs, which allow instead of the common breast-plough; on them to yield and prevent accidents when foul land it is of the greatest utility and coming in contact with hillocks or other importance, the tines being curved so as to bring all the weeds to the surface, and arranged to prevent the possibility of clogging.
Considerable improvements have been effected in the construction by which its strength has been increased, and its management rendered more simple and convenient; it may be readily adjusted to any depth, any kind of point' or hoe' may be used, and it will turn round in a small space.
A Cultivator with five tines, covering a width of 42 inches, price, £10 10s., in London, £11 5s. Ditto with seven tines, covering a width of 60 inches, £12 12s., in London, £13 10s.
One set of plain 'grubbers,' one set of 'scarifiers' 11 inches wide, and an oil-can are sent with the implement.
Breast-plough-shares, 6s. each.
FERRABEE'S WROUGHT-IRON CULTIVATOR. This implement possesses all the capabilities of the above, but being manufactured entirely of wrought iron, it is much lighter and stronger. It is fitted with an improved lever adjustment, by which the tines are raised and lowered with the utmost facility, and are set to work any depth from one to seven inches, and elevated six inches above the ground when travelling.
The same points' or 'hoes' are suitable for both.
Price, with five tines, £12., in London, £12 10s. Ditto, seven tines, £14 14s., in London, £15 10s.

HAY MAKING MACHINE, made chiefly of metal on an improved principle, and will effectually spread grass or hay without being liable to clog from its coiling round the spindle or axles. The rakes are fitted to strong springs, which allow them to yield and prevent accidents when coming in contact with hillocks or other unusual obstacles, they can be regulated to any distance from the ground, according to the crop, and are thrown out of motion when travelling; one horse will work it. Price £13, in London £13 13s.
STEAMING APPARATUS on the most economical principle, and requires no brick work or other fixing. The boiler is very compact, having the fire-place inside, which is surrounded by water, and fitted with a close ash pit and an iron chimney; a force pump and cistern are attached to the boiler for supplying it with water. The steaming cistern is of wrought iron mounted on an iron frame with a lever for emptying, and is furnished with two false bottoms, one for roots, hay, &c., the other for meal, &c.
