Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers

Thomas Green Registered Design No 3739

The Journal of The Society of Arts recorded that Thomas Green of Leeds registered a design for a "Budding's" mower on 24 July 1855.

This was not a Budding lawnmower in the conventional configuration. Instead the design registered by Green had what might be described as a "chariot" layout to be pulled along with a roller at the back and a single jockey wheel at the front. It would seem that "Budding" mower at this time referred to a lawnmower with a cutting cylinder, irrespective of the overall configuration of the constituent parts.

Although the design was registered in 1855, the first illustrations of the new lawnmower did not appear in print until the following year when there are numerous examples in, for example, the Gardeners' Chronicle. At about the same time, Shanks began to publicise its new (almost identical) mower with the same configuration. Both companies claimed to be sole manufacturer.
