Early Mention of Thomas Green of Leeds
This trade directory from 1837 shows that Thomas Green was working as a wire worker at No. 34 Lowerhead Row, Leeds, with Henry McPhail. By 23 May 1838, an article in The Leeds Gazette announced that the partnership had been dissolved by mutual consent.
We know that Green's early work was predominantly the selling of wire stock proof fencing, ie for penning in animals, for farms and aviaries or use in horticultural gardens and nurseries. By 1848 he had moved to premises at 97 North Street, Leeds, which he subsequently developed into the Smithfield Ironworks. In 1851 he exhibited at The Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London with: "Wire aviary & ornamental seats".
These were the small beginnings of the company that by the 1860s had established itself as the market leader and most prolific producer of lawnmowers in the UK. Thomas Green & Son was to dominate the market with its large range of mowers and rollers for the rest of the 19th century.
