Shanks Arbroath Britisher Badge - Rust Removal

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hi folks,

I have recently bought myself my first old lawnmower badge and need advise on how best to remove rust from the badge whilst leaving the remnants of the original Red paint intact, OR,should I just leave it as it is. My usual 'go to' White Vinegar I think is going to be too harsh ?

As always, thanks for any advice.

Hi Rob, I would use nylon brush with soapy water dry thoroughly with heat gun, hair dryer or in rhe sun!, then either paint with Owatrol or apply wax based polish.

Will let you know if I come across any badges that might be of interest.

Hello Rob,

  1.  Just leave as it is and put some freeing / maintenance fluid on it (i.e. stuff in Blue & Yellow tins /  containers)

2. Clean off to bare metal and repaint with primer and top coat, then the decision of what colour to use.

So the decision is yours.

I must say on a tangent, its good to collect cast iron badges, name plates seats etc, but  i am  not a fan of people getting a mower for £5 or less, then selling the badge online at a ridiculous price, often 4 times more than the mower   and then scraping the rest of the mower!!!!

Only recently I saw an Automower in an auction, somebody had swapped the cast iron seat for a pressed steel later one, but still it made £500.

Still I suppose people can do what they want with things they buy......
