Afternoon All

I'd like to introduce my Ransomes Marquis 4A 18" mower.  Very excited to own one of these amazing mowers.  It's not without issue.  As you can see the cutting cylinder is fairly worn (grass does not get thrown into the back of the box (around120mm diameter with only about 3mm blade protruding from the web) and will only run on 3/4 choke despite me removing jets and cleaning as best as I can.

As there is no mixer jet (I'm mainly familiar with the Zenith carbs from ATCO Deluxe) please can I ask for some advice on what the likely issue is and whether a total clean in a suitable bath is needed.  I'm aware you can alter the mixture by adjusting the pin attached to the throttle cable but it appears to be protruding a lot already.

Further - what would you advise in terms of the condition of my cutting cylinder and how to obtain a replacement?

With kindest regards

Jon

Hi Jon.

With regard to you aking about a replacement Cutting Cylinder. I had a new Cutting Cylinder for my 1950s Webb 2 Speed 12" push mower made by Garfitts who are based in Sheffield- 0114 251 3344. They have also supplied me with new Bottom Blades for my JP push mowers. Might be worth a ring?  Cheers. Rob

Thanks Rob!  A custom made new cylinder sounds expensive!  What was your experience?

I'd be very grateful for some support with my carburation question too if anyone might be able to help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jon. As I had the new cutting cylinder from Garfitts back in 2021 I cannot remember it's price. From memory, it certainly wasn't mega bucks.  The other option I had at the time was to try and source a donor machine, but I had it in the back of my mind, would that cutting cylinder be in any better condition  considering the machines age, plus, how long would it take me to find a donor machine. My experience of enquiries made and orders placed with Garfitts have all been positive.  Sadly, I cannot offer any advise on your other question as I only have push mowers, sorry!

Cheers. Rob
