Ransomes Marquis Mk 4 relining of clutches advice please
Hi,
I own a Ransomes Marquis Mk 4 (not 4a) and I am planning to get the centrifugal clutch and land roller clutch relined.
- I am concerned about asbestos, I understand that they do contain it?
2. What is the thickness of the land roller clutch supposed to be either side of the steel plate? I am planning to make the trapezoidal pads 15-16mm thick, so they will be protruding 5.5mm beyond the 5mm thick steel gear plate, on either side. I have determined this by measuring the land roller clutch springs and what I think could be achieved.
3. I have requested quotes and a couple of the re-lining companies have suggested re-lining the entire land roller surface instead of replacing the 18no. clutch trapezoids. Is this acceptable? Will the mechanism still work or do the trapezoidal brake surfaces in the clutch need to be free? - I am considering getting hold of some brake material and sending it off to get CNC machined. I am thinking water jetting may be best, can anyone advise? Are these for sale anywhere? - I am seeking asbestos free clutches.
4. What is the thickness of the centrifugal clutch shoes meant to be? I am planning to get them made to 9mm thick above the steel shoe surface. I have based this upon assuming that the images in the manual are to scale, which does not fill me with confidence.

Elsewhere on the forum, these trapezoids are confirmed as discreet individually cut items:
