Thomas Green - Patent No 1831
A.D. 1856
N° 1831.
Mowing Machines.
LETTERS PATENT to Thomas Green, of Leeds, Mowing Machine Maker, for the Invention of "IMPROVEMENTS IN MOWING MACHINERY."
Sealed the 9th December 1856, and dated the 2nd August 1856.
PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by the said Thomas Green at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his Petition, on the 2nd August 1856.
I, THOMAS GREEN, of Leeds, Mowing Machine Maker, do hereby declare the nature of the Invention for "IMPROVEMENTS IN MOWING MACHINERY," to be as follows:-
This Invention has for its object improvements in mowing machines; and the improvements consist in forming or fixing two arms or brackets to the front of the machine, one to each side framing. At the front ends of these arms or brackets are formed sockets to receive upright rods or bars, which at their lower ends are formed suitable for receiving the end of an axle or shaft ; and the parts are arranged to admit of the height of axis or shaft being adjusted to regulate the height of the cutters from the ground. On the axis or shaft are two wheels or narrow rollers, which are capable of being set and fixed at any desired distance apart on the axis, and to any part of the axis or shaft, so that when mowing a verge they may come upon or on either side thereof, and when mowing the whole width of the machine the wheels or rollers may be fixed at the greatest distance apart, so as not to pass over the grass to be cut.
The Invention also consists in placing the gearing wheels, by which the cutters are driven, within the framing of the machine, in place of exterior thereof, as heretofore.
SPECIFICATION in pursuance of the conditions of the Letters Patent, filed by the said Thomas Green in the Great Seal Patent Office, on the 2nd February 1857.
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME, I, THOMAS GREEN, of Leeds, Mowing Machine Maker, send greeting.
WHEREAS Her most Excellent Majesty Queen Victoria, by Her Letters Patent, bearing date the Second day of August, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty-six, in the twentieth year of Her reign, did, for Herself, Her heirs and successors, give and grant unto me, the said Thomas Green, Her special licence, that I, the said Thomas Green, my executors, administrators, and assigns, or such others as I, the said Thomas Green, my executors, administrators, and assigns, should at any time agree with, and no others, from time to time and at all times thereafter, during the term therein expressed, should and lawfully might make, use, exercise, and vend, within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Channel Islands, and Isle of Man, an Invention for "IMPROVEMENTS IN MOWING MACHINERY;" upon the condition (amongst others) that I, the said Thomas Green, my executors, or administrators, by an instrument in writing, under my, or their, or one of their hands and seals, should particularly describe and ascertain the nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the same was to be performed, and cause the same to be filed in the Great Seal Patent Office within six calendar months next and immediately after the date of the said Letters Patent.
NOW KNOW YE, that I, the said Thomas Green, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement thereof, that is to say:-
This Invention has for its object improvements in mowing machines; and the improvements consist in forming or fixing two arms or brackets to the front of the machine, one to each side framing. At the front ends of these arms or brackets are formed sockets to receive upright rods or bars, which at their lower ends are formed suitable for receiving the end of an axle or shaft, and the parts are arranged to admit of the height of axis, a shaft being adjusted to regulate the height of the cutters from the ground.
And in order that my Invention may be most fully understood and readily carried into effect, I will proceed to describe the Drawings hereunto annexed.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation, and Figure 2 a plan, of a machine con- structed according to my Invention. a, a, are arms or brackets, formed with or fixed to the side framings of the machine. To the arms a, a, upright bars or rods b, b, are fixed by screws b', which pass through slots in the bars b, b, so as to be capable of adjustment; or the front ends of the brackets a, a, may be formed with sockets to receive the bars b, b, the sockets being furnished with set screws or other means of adjusting the position of the parts b, b, in order to regulate the height of the cutters from the ground. c1 is an axis or shaft, supported in suitable bearings at the lower ends of the bars b, b; and c', c', are wheels or narrow rollers, which are capable of being set and fixed by collars and set screws, as shown, at any desired distance apart, and to any part of the axis or shaft c, so that when mowing a verge the rollers may come upon or on either side thereof, and when mowing the whole width of the machine the wheels or rollers c1, c1, may be fixed at the greatest distance apart on the axis c, so as not to pass over the grass to be cut. The driving wheels 1, 2, 3, 4, for giving motion to the revolving cutters, are all carried on axes, and work within the framing of the machine, as clearly shown in the Drawing, by which arrangement injury will be avoided when working near flower beds, shrubberies, &c. d, d, are handles for propelling the machine, which are capable of adjustment to suit the height of the person mowing; and e is a handle in front by which the machine may be drawn. ƒ is a winch handle to turn the cutter axis, to sharpen the cutters, when required; g, lever to throw the wheel 1 out of gear with its axis, to stop the action of the cutters; h, is the box for receiving the grass, and is of the ordinary description.
In witness whereof, I, the said Thomas Green, have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Twenty-ninth day of January, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven.
THOMAS GREEN. (L.S.)
Witness to the signing, sealing, and delivery hereof by the said Thomas Green, EDWIN EDDISON, Solicitor, Leeds.
