JP advice
Hi all,
New member looking for advice on a couple of JP mowers I obtained over the summer and hopefully restoring over the winter.
First up is a JP 12" Mini-mower from March 1970
This is in good working order, original as far as I can tell apart from a couple of nuts.
The land roller has some surface corrosion which I will resolve, my query is does this model have a differential?
The part list in the instruction manual does not mention pawls so I suspect not.
Next up is a JP Maxees-14 from April 1961
This is very well used (the front rollers are worn, not rotten!) and seems to be completely original.
I am in need of a new bottom blade (as there are a few chunks missing) and screws, any advice on where to source?
The front rollers need replacing and I would like to enlarge slightly to increase the cutting height to around 25mm. This will change the bottom blade angle but not sure of the overall impact with the front rollers flattening the grass before the blade.
This post has me intrigued : https://oldlawnmowerclub.co.uk/forum/general-topics/general-discussions/high-rollers - was this successful Rob?
Thanks,
David
Hi David, In answer to your…
Hi David,
In answer to your question regarding the oversized wooden rollers on my Maxees 3. From memory, as it was over 4 years ago my mate was pleased with the raised cutting height achieved by them being fitted.
When the Maxees was returned to me I replaced them with the original size rollers as I was happy with the resulting cutting height that they gave.
The rollers were made by Old Lawnmower Club member Mike Floody who advertises in our club magazine, 'Grassbox' as Buffalo Rollers. Mike's e.mail is mfloody@hotmail.co.uk
You mention that you need a new bottom blade. I obtained a new bottom blade for my Maxees back in 2024 from Garfitts International Ltd, who are based in Sheffield, telephone number 0114 2513344. I already had the screws so had no need to source those.
Regarding the grass being flattened by the wooden front rollers, I was finding that happening when doing the first cut after winter so I got 2 smaller wooden rollers, (from Mike Floody), and put them at the outer edge of the roller spindle separated by a piece of hosepipe that I slid onto to the roller spindle on my ATCO 1264 push mower. Works wells.....in my opinion....being the first cut of the season the grass was very wet as you can see from the photo..
Cheers.
Rob
