The Qualcast ad on the front cover of the latest issue of Grassbox prompts me to ask gents here if they have ever experienced the situation depicted. That is, have you ever lounged in the sun reading a newspaper while your other half mowed the lawn?
This ad is by no means the only one to suggest that 'Her Indoors' can operate a mower. Such ads go right back to the early days of mechanised mowers.
But I have yet to meet a woman who would willingly cut the grass when there's a man around to badger into doing it!
You're right that these adverts which many people today would see as sexist go right back to the beginning of the visual advertising of lawn mowers at the beginning of the 1900s. Ransomes seems to have been particularly keen...
However, I think my partner would take exception to the final comment. She will happily (and asks to) mow the lawn when she's staying with me. Admittedly it's a modern ride-on machine and she would probably baulk if I sat back and watched...
