Hello to all in the old lawnmower club

I have just got hold of an old Hayter Harrier 19 code 046 as a restoration project, its not in the greatest shape, but its not in the worst either, the deck is in pretty good solid condition other than the outer chain guard, and it doesn't run at present (it will do soon enough). I will be stripping it completely and repainting etc

I have a few questions, if anyone can help.   First one is, I'd like to know how old it's likely to be, Google is drawing a blank and just points me towards part catalogues, I know it's old as it's the old hater green.

I have stripped all the top covers off and removed the engine so far, and have found what seems to be one of two chains missing.  The outer chain is present, the inner chain is missing. What I'm confused with is, if both chains were present they would both be doing the same thing? A horizontal shaft comes from the engine to the first clutch and sprocket, (the sprocket lines up with a sprocket at the rear on the roller but has no chain) this clutch is attached to the cable that goes up to handle bars, it works as it should (it disengages drive to roller, just about, it's stretched). The shaft continues to a second clutch that has no cable fitted to it then through the side of the body to another sprocket with chain that runs to the outer sprocket of the rear roller.   Should there be a second chain or have Hayter just used the mechanism from a different model and this model doesn't use the second chain ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Hello,

Yes that's part of the issue, I have found that schematic before and seen that it has a gear selector on it, but the one I have has no selector mecahnsim and no place for one, that's why I was thinking maybe they used the same sproket/clutch assembly on different models.  I sent pictures of the mower to Hayter help via email, they told me it was a Hayter 19 code 046,  I asked them because my mower doesn't look the same as Hayter 2,s I've found, very similar but mine has a moldedo name on front and not a sticker like all the other Hayter 2's I've found. Maybe they told me wrong information ?

Once again, an image ( or two) is worth a thousand words !

A decent image or two will give those of us who worked on the early Harriers a clue or two as to what you have - possibly a “ bitsa” , using bits of a two speed machine to get out of trouble on an earlier single speed.
