Waterfall Line Marker
Finished restoring a Waterfall Line Marker today, patented in 1908 by Rowland Hirst a descendant of Benjamin Hirst whose business B. Hirst & Sons made a selection of roller mowers from 1867 to the 1880's.
Its interesting that this is the only line marker I have found that Ransomes sold & only for one year appearing in their 1910 catalogue.
Three sizes available, 1, 2, & 3, ours is a No2.
One of its benefits was that when reversed it did not throw whitener onto the roller due to the waterwheel type cups being shaped to pick up the liquid only when rotating forward.
Hirst & Sons were famous for their tennis requisites during the 1920s/30s & interesting to note their telegram address during this period was "Waterfall Halifax".
Useful information Clive,…
Useful information Clive, and a nice job. Makes mine, bought at this years Annual Rally auction, look a bit shabby though it does look it's age. Spent ages cleaning off successive layers of caked on ' white ', presumably due to careless use and maintenance.
I'm on the lookout for a Hirst lawnmower though imagine they are a little more likely to crop up in Yorkshire rather than Suffolk/Norfolk.
