Hello all

Please take a look at this photo of an early small push mower, I'm baffled as are a couple of experts I have already spoken to,

Can you help us please,

It may not be complete?

Has a very distinctive 6 spoke gear

May be very early?

Thanks

It could be a Budding or a licensed copy by Ransomes or Greens, the large rear roller and the lack of casing around the cutting cylinder makes me think so, but I'm not sure since I'm not an expert with mowers that age.

Is this a machine you're planning to buy?

Nice old picture, unfortunately never until now have managed to be able to use this forum (might get value for our membership at long last!)

Clive obviously the to experts you got in touch with were ametuers, the mower depicted is a Ferrabee post 1858.

Ferrabee's continued making mowers to the early 1870's, they had brochures but are very rare.We do have many examples in our archives.

Just to add Ferrabees had a retail shop in Wandsworth, London until 1880.

Just to add when Foxtalbert invented the camera it was classed as a scientific instrument, in the 1880's there was a census using these early instruments in the Cotswolds by the Government at the time, taking pictures of houses, garden gates, and other obscure objects, these are now held in a collection by the V & A Museum.Incidently the V&A was formed to hold the many exhibits from the Great Exhibition of 1858.

Welcome to the forum are you new to collecting????

Thanks for the information Andrew, the above is a joke of course!!

The post was over 2 years ago my mower information/knowledge has moved on a bit since then & had identified the mower.I do have some other old unidentified mower photo's & mowers that I may run past you at some stage.

I see you hit the press yesterday, I know theres been a lot of old news about the 1st W.War, but good to see a bit of of old mower news too. Some good images of you & your mower on the Mails website. Look forward to seeing the actual mower someday. Wish I had a pound for every one who has flagged it up to me!! Thanks again for your response.

Cheers for now.
