Atco Balmoral 17S Engine Replacement.

Member(s),

I am new to the forums.

I own an Atco Balmoral 17s manufactured in 2001, fitted with a Tecumseh Engine/Tillotson carb. The engine is suffering an oil leak from the recoil starter side, possibly gasket or oil seal.

I'm seeking advice as to which engine may be suitable as a replacement for the mower.

I understand Loncin, Honda and Kawasaki may be possible replacements.

I am concerned to understand which horizontal shaft engine will be compatible with the height, length and diameter of the existing shaft.

All help and guidance will be very welcome.

Regards,

John Grice

Quite possibly the crankshaft oil seal behind the flywheel. Not usually a big job to sort, and unless there’s another issue , hardly worth swapping the engine. However, with that engine’s Tecumseh ancestry there shouldn’t be an issue in fitting any of the engines that you mention. Shaft length or keyway might be an issue , depending on the original application.

Personally I'd investigate the oil leak and cause of it before replacing the whole engine, it might only be a simple oil seal costing less than £5, more cost effective! unless you prefer a different engine.
