Sorry my content hasn’t uploaded only the photos , probably my fault.

Anyway, bowling club mower,  complaining of friction burning smell, after removing chain cover

noticed the cork liner has dropped below the big sprocket ( second photo). Not fixed one of these before, should the liner be in this position or glued to the inner sprocket and when the clutch lever is pulled tight it presses against the inside of the bigger sprocket to drive machine .

Had a look at some atco diagrams but it is hard to tell whether it should loose or stuck in place also parts websites state the cork liner is a obsolete item, any help would greatly appreciated.

Never even seen one of those let alone worked on one but that chain tensioner pulling the chain away from the sprocket is a bit unusual. It would be more usual to have a tensioner pushing the chain inwards but maybe that’s how it should be. Does any manual or illustrated parts diagram confirm that it’s correct ?

As for the cork liner , I would think that something should keep it in place. Possibly the smell of burning is likely to be accompanied with the discolouration of some component - any sign of that.

Continued! My post got interrupted by a Tesco delivery!

I presume the cork should be bonded to either the sprocket or the pressure plate - any signs of failed adhesive? Your second image does appear to show “cork dust” on the side frame so perhaps the displaced disc of cork has been milled away giving rise to the smell. If the cork is fit for reuse, I have found that Loctite Multibond adhesive useful for such applications - particularly for Hayter 21 and Osprey transmission clutches.

Thanks, I think it is going to be trial or error fixing it, Magic parts have a diagram, but something is wrong with there website, licensing issues, it is difficult to excess the diagram. There the only company online that have a diagram including part nos. I will try atco themselves after the bank holiday see if they have any info.

Just a follow on in case anybody else comes across similar machines, I phoned my local atco dealer who are a old fashioned outfit but superb.
I explained the situation and as commented by wristpin the cork liner could be cleaned and can be re-glued to the friction plate. On further investigation I probably could have done this but the friction plate on the cog side is damaged, so I ordered a new friction plate and the cork liner is already attached, didn’t think £38.00 inc vat wasn’t to bad a price.

The origins of this mower lie with Masport so may be Wristpin will have seen one under that brand name.

The route of the drive chain agrees with the picture in the Atco Clipper hand book that I saved last year while sorting one out for a colleague last year.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the new sprocket to reach you we had to wait a while for a replacement bottom blade.

There was a possible security issue with a Dropbox file containing a copy of the oprtsto’s manual for the Clipper so it’s been remover.  Tried to remove the whole post but it wouldn’t cooperate, hence the header with no content.
