Leeds London and Dublin

A great find Stan, there are various references to Greens manufacturing for the Irish market in the early 1860's, exhibiting at the Dublin International Exhibition from 1862 to 1865. In the UK they did mention their Dublin outlet in 1866 advertisements showing a Silens Messor with Leeds, London, Liverpool & Dublin on the handle castings. A few of these machines have survived and are assumed to have come from that period. Later advertising dropped the Dublin reference.

Greens were advertising rollers as early as 1850, although they do not appear in the 1859 lawn mower brochure we have, rollers were also made for using on gravel paths. 

I attach below an 1862 ad where the rollers were advertised with mowers & a later ad from 1877.

It would appear the circular nameplate that we see on the majority of Greens rollers was introduced in the period 1910-1914.

Some sales figures have been recorded for greens rollers, 1906  1360 sold & 1907 1642 sold.

From the above and noting your rollers number it may well be from the 1860's?

Thanks for that Clive. Found a article in grassbox 112 relating to rollers by Christopher Proudfoot. Shows his early style Greens roller c1862? No 901, and also his Leeds London and Dublin roller No 1124.  Also we have a T Green and Son Ltd, Leeds and London ( will post a photo next week) same style as the Dublin can't quite remember the number but it's in the 8 thousands so production must have increased rapidly between 1907 and 1910 when the new circular nameplate model was introduced.
