Greens Monitor Identification
Hi all
I recently came across a Greens Monitor which although missing a side cover and grass box is regularly used and loved for its performance. Being a OLC member I volunteered my services in finding out its history and age. However despite pouring over many photos I have been unable to find a match for the handle with the Monitor name plate being low down. If any members can shed some light on this design It would be greatly appreciated and may restore some of my credibility.
Many thanks

Hi folks. Having seen Ken's…
Hi folks. Having seen Ken's post on the Monitor I was interested to see another style of Cutting Cylinder Height Adjuster on the mower. My Mk1 and Mk2 Monitor (without the Pram Handle), both have different types of adjuster. I particularly like the adjusters on the MK 1 which are similar to the cutting height adjusters on JP models. I agree with Ken's comment about the Monitor being loved for it's performance, I certainly enjoy using mine and the resulting cut they give is great. Cheers. Rob
Thanks olcadmin and…
Thanks olcadmin and RansomesRob for your comments.
It would seem that apart from this machine being produced sometime in the 1950's very little info is available. From the pictures on the olc website and from the few on sale on e:bay there are none that match the handle configuration although the cutting cylinder adjuster is a common feature.
thanks again, KenG53

More Monitor info. Hi Ken. Thought you might be interested in the photos showing details on Monitor mower models that were taken from two undated copies of Green's sales brochures that I have. I presume the sales brochures were from the 1950s? Cheers. Rob

Hi all, I also have one of these monitors but need a side cover and name plate. If anyone can help that would be great. Also what was the original colours please. Thanks Trevor.

Just spotted a Green Monitor Skulking in the grass.......... no not the scaly Lizard, a Green's Roller mower, I bought yesterday and collected this morning.
Briefly Looking on secondary sources, I see they were launched C.1946 and presumably made well in the 60's. I note some (mostly the more high end Zephyr Model) have the loop handle bars. As at the 1953 Exhibition photo in John Pease's book on Thomas Green's.
I see from looking on previous posts and topics and the adverts kindly added by Rob. that Green's changed the transfers and logos, so wonder when my rusty lizard was built? And what the difference is between a Mk1 & MK2 ?

Hi Paul
Here's what I can ad,
Intro as you say 1946 & as in the image below which came from Thomas Greens archive that John Pease gave me. Note the adjusters were the 'rod' type. Also the flat fronted grass box & pram handle.
From ad's the images appeared to stay the same through to 1952.
1953 ad's state the 'New' rubber grips added, so that's the later handle style.
1955 First mention of Mk2 in Ad's & grass box now rounded rather than the flat front.
1958 is the first ad I can see clearly showing the circular adjusters, but could have been before.
1961 Last ad's I can see so far for new mowers.
Hope that helps.
This press clipping from…
This press clipping from 1946 certainly confirms the birth year for the Green's Monitor.
And from Rob's previous points, I see that as well as the badges / transfers changed over production, the cylinder adjuster screws design also changed.

Thank you Clive for info. So my Monitor is a late production one; a "Monitor Improved" you could say!
It was originally new to a Market gardener in Sandy, Bedfordshire, I am the third owner.
All I have done so far is treat the woodworm, not a difficult restoration, apart from the box.
Incidentally; I see the box transfers are available in the club shop.

Hi Paul
A few photos of my Monitors Mks 1 and 2 for you.
3 more to follow separately, I cannot seem to put them all on one post?
Cheers.
Rob
thank you Rob for photos,…
thank you Rob for photos, thank you Clive for chronology.
So a 15 year production run, with Greens changing notable features, such as handle-bars, badges / logo's , cylinder adjusters and grass boxes.
The Sole plate and blades on my machine are good, so I aim to use it, as in the words of Edwin Beard-Budding "healthy exercise for the Gentleman!" ( to paraphrase)
Although our lawn is a low grade utility lawn, not immaculately cared for like your one Rob.
Hi Chaps, I saw this post…
- Hi Chaps, I saw this post dedicated to the Monitor and my eyes pricked up. I have very recently acquired a Monitor (see pics) and thought I'd add something. I've started to strip mine down and do as much of a restoratio job as my ability will let me. I see on KenG53 Pic the side cover missing and exposing the chain and more specifically the chain tensioner. Do you know where I could get another rubber tensioner from please. The one on mine stopped turning at some point and has a flat spot so not turning at all now.
Good question Ken. We have…
Good question Ken.
We have seen examples of the Monitor with this type of handle and occasionally the more conventional design too. Our Mower Profile on the Monitor has some additional info and this image was shared on the site by another member a while ago. Date of your machine is perhaps early 1950s.
