Ransomes Lion
Hedley
Evening mower fans. I managed to win a Ransomes Lion on Ebay for 99p (£20 courier mind). It looks in reasonable nick below the muck. Still cuts OK and nothing is rounded off or seized. Is there a way to date these machines? All I have found so far are 2 numbers stamped on the blades, 27/28.

Totally agree, if it was easy to find date the overall condition is good & must have been stored well during its life. A gentle clean to remove the grime & the original colour will show through & can be preserved. Plus some linseed or other treanment to the wood.

Well that looks to be a nice original example for a fair price overall, bearing in mind the time that is likely to be spent cleaning it ! Fortuitously the number stamped on the blades is likely to be the date of the blades, consequently the approximate date of the machine. A luxury one gets with Ransomes mowers of this era.
Personally I would not get too carried away with a restoration i.e. repaint, after all it is nearly one hundred years old. If it's all there, works and cuts grass that's all you need.
