The Green's Royal Guniea 1874
Mowing Wurzel
Another interesting article in the Gardeners Chronicle from 31st of January 1874.
The Thomas Green & Son of Leeds & London:- "Royal Guinea."
Which I presume was their first sidewheel machine.

Thank you Clive for information on this interesting machine.
The forged / blacksmith made lift handles on the Grassbox engraving you have posted looks a lot like the one on one of the curved handle Silens Messor's in the Lumsden Collection at Picton Castle.

Hi Paul
Yes, it looks to be their first Side Wheel, but short lived I think.
Launched 1874 with rear delivery similar to Climax, then renamed the 'Royal' in 1875 with front delivery, the smallest now costing more than a Guinea, hence name change, not a lot of thought went into the original name!
Seems to have been dropped in 1876 as not in the 1877 brochure.
In noting John Pease's comments in his book, appears he did not have access to the full information & states that Greens first sidewheel was the 'Monarch' in 1879, but the 'Monarch' was in fact a roller mower introduced in around 1876.
It appears Greens had a gap of 16yrs between 1877 & 1893 with NO sidewheel mower being produced, (please correct me if I'm wrong and you can identify any others).
Their next sidewheel the 'New Monarch' coming along in 1893.
