Greens New Century - revived

This recently acquired Greens New Century turned out to be an interesting little project, not quite finished strictly speaking. The chap it came from pulled it out of a skip at the council tip in Stowmarket about fifteen years ago. At the time he planned to restore it for use on his small lawn. For one reason or another he never got round to it and the mower remained in a shed  until a couple of weeks ago.

Although beforehand I had not seen any photos I was keen to get it as it had a throw plate and original grassbox which I think is not all that common. The T handle was broken and wormy and almost inevitably the cast badge was absent. However careful cleaning of the handle shaft revealed a couple of transfers which I had not come across before.

The ' Adjust Handle Here ' amused me - just how much adjustment did they think was possible with a conventional twin bolted to bow irons handle ? Believe me it's negligible.

Anyway you will have to excuse the incorrect badge on a borrowed handle for the photos -it's actually a 9" machine.

The white in the grassbox appears to be correct.

Original transfer or what's left of it on the grassbox, sadly not enough to reproduce.

The New Century seems to have enjoyed a relatively long life, being sold, if not manufactured, between about 1900 and the 1930's. This one probably dates from around 1920 based on the machine number, kindly researched by Clive. In due course I will make a new T handle but need a cast badge; anyone got one they are willing to part with ? Meantime I've bodged up a replica but I'm not going to show you that !
