What spring is this? B&S 5HP engine

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hi,

Could anyone tell me what spring this is please? Engine is a Briggs and Stratton 132232-0320-01 (1988) on an Atco Royale 24.

I’m not convinced it an OEM part?

Thanks,

Ross

You are correct in thinking that spring is not original. However when Atco started  using that engine some machines exhibited some hunting / erratic running, and both BS and Atco issued similar service bulletins suggesting a cure which involved fitting a light spring to damp the erratic throttle operation. What you have is someone’s diy version to tackle the issue.

Ah, thank you. That would explain it. Is it something a new carb would resolve, or do you know if it was an issue elsewhere in the engine/governor?

The other thing strange, and know knowing what you shared, was this spring (see attached) on the linkage from the governor. I expect this is also someone’s attempt to resolve the hunting!

Thanks, Ross

Difficult to see amongst the dirt and debris but I think it’s original. If you obtain the appropriate workshop and parts manuals you will see that spring and another long one that is shown in one of your images and they were referred to as anti-rattle or anti-surge springs. Basically their function was to take the slack out of the linkage.

The BS manual covering your engine is 270962-12/03 Single Cylinder”L” Head (built after 1981). Somewhere I should still have a hard copy parts manual, but you should be able to find it on line from a BS parts supplier such as BriggsParts.

Thank you. I took a look at the manual and couldn’t see the same linkage that I’ve got on mine.

In the two pictures I posted, it’s the same spring - I just took it off the rod for the second pic.

In any vids I’ve seen of the same engine, that spring doesn’t seem to be there. Also, the other thing that made me question it was I cannot see anywhere the other end clips on to and it wasn’t connected to anything when I took it apart originally.

From memory, but fairly sure the rod threads though the spring and the spring’s ends either hook into the same holes as the rod or there may be tiny holes adjacent to the rod’s ones. Unfortunately , not got one around to look at.
