Thomas Green Arrives in Leeds

Thomas Green (18/11/1810-04/01/1892) was born in Palethorpe (now Perlethorpe ) near Newark in Nottinghamshire. He completed an apprenticeship as a joiner in Sheffield.

At some time during 1835 this young man who was destined to transform the lawnmower industry arrived in Leeds, some 50 miles (80km) north of his birthplace. From small beginnings as a wire worker, Thomas Green was to find fame and make his fortune with an engineering business that produced a wide range of products including, from 1855, lawnmowers.
