Budding's & Clyburn's Adjustable Spanners
Edwin Budding registered a design (No 7213) for an adjustable spanner on 19 May 1843. This advertisement from 1885 shows Budding's design on the right with Richard Clyburn's "shifter" spanner - also from 1843 - on the left. They were still being referred to as Budding and Clyburn spanners in catalogues as late as the early 1900s. Both designs are universally recognised and produced to this day.
