John Ferrabee Has Water Pipe Installed

The minutes of a meeting held by the Thames and Severn Navigation on 12 August 1844 record that John Ferrabee was to have a water pipe from the canal to his cowsheds. We can assume this is near the Thrupp Mill site, as John also had land at Bowbridge and Brimscombe. On the 1836 railway route plan map there is a shed outline next to the canal in the Thrupp Mill meadows, approximate now to the car park adjacent to the Stroud Brewery restaurant.

  • Photograph taken from Bagpath Lane towards site of Phoenix Ironworks. The canal cannot be seen as it is below the brow of the hill.
