Chester Hill House, Woodchester
As well as owning Spring Park/Woodchester Park, The Earl of Ducie owned Chester Hill House, Woodchester. John Morton was resident at Chester Hill House, which was eventually sold in 1848 following the main Woodchester Park sale.
John Morton was described in a Gloucestershire Agricultural Society Report. as being a leading figure in agricultural science from Ayrshire in Scotland. Morton also ran Whitfield Farm (later ran by his son John Chalmers Morton), which was owned by Ducie, and advised on agricultural implement designs made at The Uley Ironworks.
From documents in The Farmers Almanac in 1844, it seems John Morton senior was at Chester Hill House, Woodchester while John Chalmers Morton was running Whitfield Example Farm, which is to the west of Tortworth Park, an estate once owned by the Ducie family. The site is now HMP Leyhill.
John Morton and John Chalmers Morton were certainly known to Edwin Budding but we will probably never know whether Budding ever went to this rather grand home.
