JAMES AND HENRY FERRABEE, PHOENIX IRON WORKS, NEAR STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE,
ENGINEERS, MILLWRIGHTS, MACHINISTS, IRON AND BRASS FOUNDERS, AND MANUFACTURERS OF
AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENTS
INVITE the attention of owners and occupiers of land to their improved system of machinery, for preparing all kinds of agricultural produce for market or for use and consumption on the farm. And they particularly wish to bring prominently under the consideration of agriculturists generally the important advantage to them of possessing facilities for thrashing and cleaning all kinds of grain and depositing it in the sack at oneand the same time, at less expense per quar- ter (including interest of money on the origi- nal outlay) than by the machines in ordinary use, and also to leave it in a much superior condition.
J. & H. F. have pleasure in being able to refer to gentlemen who have adopted their machinery, and who have kindly offered to afford information or allow inspection.
JAMES AND HENRY FERRABEE'S IMPROVED SYSTEM OF FARM MACHINERY. MOTIVE POWER.-This is obtained either from a stationary or portable steam engine, or from a water wheel where that power is available, and the construction is varied according to the nature of the situation.
THRASHING AND DRESSING MACHI- NERY.-This is a combination of machinery which separates the grain from the straw, frees it entirely from dust and chaff, equalizes the sample by taking the small corns, seeds, &c., from the best, and deposits the whole into the sacks ready for delivery-all these operations being performed at the same time. There is a Hummeller attached to the machinery, so that barley can be as perfectly cleaned at one operation as any other grain. The straw is thoroughly well shaken and delivered to the feeding board of the chaff cutter or elsewhere.
FERRABEE'S CHAFF CUTTER.-This machine will cut hay, straw, &c., into suitable lengths for food and for litter; it can be sharpened without removing the knives by a simple apparatus attached to the frame for that purpose, and it possesses every facility for starting and stop- ping.
GRINDING MILL.-This consists of a pair of stones made from French burrs, and are mounted in a substantial iron frame, so as to be complete in itself. Grinding by stones is superior to any other method of reducing grain to meal.
CRUSHING MACHINES.-These are for crushing linseed, oats, barley, beans, oilcake, &c., and are made of various sizes and on different principles to suit the varying requirements of parties.
TRAVELLING BANDS.-These are for conveying the straw, cut chaff, litter, &c., from the machines to rooms for containing it. The extent to which they are used is of course optional.
The cost of erecting the above machinery varies according to the nature of the buildings, so that a fixed price cannot be quoted for it. J. & H. F. therefore invite communication from parties who contemplate its adoption, in order to elicit such information as will enable them to furnish a estimate.
J. and H. F. also manufacture Portable Thrashing Machines from one to six-horse power; Horse Powers for driving Machinery, Hummellers, Winnowers, Corn Separators, Chaff Cutters, Corn Crushers, Cake Crushers, Turnip Cutters, Harrows, the Ducie Cultivator, Land Rollers, Presser and Clod Crusher Rollers, Horse Hoes, Haymaking Machines, Mowing Machines, Cast-iron Mangers, Water, Pig and Sheep Troughs, Hay Racks, Pillars for Rick Staddles, &c., &c., descriptions of these being contained in their Illustrated Catalogue, which may be had free, by post.
