PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by James Ferrabee and Henry Ferrabee at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with their Petition, on the 26th September 1860.

We, JAMES FERRABEE, of Phoenix Ironworks, Stroud, in the County of 5 Gloucester, Engineer, and HENRY FERRABEE, of Camberwell, in the County of Surrey, Agent, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for "IMPROVEMENTS IN APPARATUS FOR LIGHTING, HEATING, VENTILATING, AND COOKING BY GAS, AND PART OF WHICH INVENTION IS APPLICABLE TO HEATING APPARATUSES OF OTHER DESCRIPTIONS" to be as follows:-

Our apparatus for lighting, heating, ventilating, and cooking by gas consists of two cases, an inner and an outer case, made of suitable materials, and con- structed so that when placed one within the other there shall be a space around, above, and below the inner case between it and the outer case. The cases may be of a cylindrical or other suitable form. The bottom of the outer 15 case has a regulating valve fitted to it for admitting air, and the top of this case is fitted so that when it and the valve are closed the case is almost air-tight. Within the inner case the jets or burners for the gas are placed in connection with a supply pipe passing through the outer case and in through the close bottom of the inner case. Suitable apertures are made in the inner case for 20 the admission of air from the outer case to support the combustion of the gas. To the top of the inner case is fitted a nozzle, which may be carried through the outer case near the top, or a pipe may be connected to it and be carried down between the inner and the outer case and out at the bottom. The nozzle or pipe communicates with a flue or other outlet, and is fitted with a regulating valve. In constructing the inner and 5 outer cases we introduce glass, or some other transparent material, in such a manner as to allow light to be transmitted to a room from the ignited gas within the inner case.

Action of the apparatus.-When the gas is lighted the regulating valves of the outer case and of the nozzle are opened, air passes through the valve at the 10 bottom of the outer case and surrounds the inner case, where it quickly becomes heated and communicates heat to the outer case, which throws it off into the room. The combustion of the gas is supported by the heated air passing from the outer case through the apertures provided for the purpose in the inner case, and the products of combustion pass off through the nozzle and 15 pipe into the flue or other outlet. By these means light is obtained, a genial and healthy temperature is produced all over a room without any smell what- ever from the apparatus. Ventilation is accomplished by the atmosphere being constantly absorbed and changed by the apparatus, and bread may be baked and various other cooking operations performed in the space between 20 the inner and the outer case.

When an apparatus is not required to give light, the glass or other trans- parent material may be dispensed with in the construction. And in con- structing an apparatus specially for cooking, heating water, or other purposes, where it is desirable to prevent the heat from being radiated, the outer case 25 may be made a non-conductor of heat, and there may be one inner case or more, and the form and arrangement of the cases may be modified in various ways. And in some instances we make the inner case double, and supply the chamber thus formed with water. This double case is fitted with inlet and outlet pipes for connecting to a bath or a cistern, or a range of pipes or other 30 apparatus requiring warm water, and it may be either wholly or partially surrounded by an outer case.

We also construct lamps for gas with inner and outer cases of glass, or glass and metal, or some other material, and fitted with valves or nozzles, as before described; and we make an apparatus consisting of two or more such 35 lamps connected with one outlet pipe for carrying off the products of combustion. Lamps and apparatus thus constructed may be either suspended or supported, and may be used for heating as well as lighting.

We also construct a stand, with outlet, by means of which two or more of the apparatuses herein described may be conveniently and advantageously used at the same time in connection with one outlet; and such stand being provided with a receiver for the condensed water or other products resulting 5 from the slow combustion of coal or other fuel, it is applicable to heating apparatuses or stoves of other descriptions.
