Decline of James Ferrabee & Co

Despite the apparent breadth of the range, the number of products made and supplied by James Ferrabee & Co was decreasing significantly by the early 1860s. James Ferrabee left the business and it was briefly known as the Phoenix Iron Works Company in 1862/3, with George Wailes taking over the lease by the end of 1863.

According to H.B. Randall, the Ferrabees retained a small manufacturing presence at Port Mill Brimbscombe, mainly for experimental work, with the manufacture of many larger products such as steam engines contracted out. Randall also states that, according to indentures, that the family and its descendants owned the Phoenix site until 1923/4.
