Ransomes & Sims Improved Lawnmower - Introduced 1861
Introduced in 1861, this was the first lawnmower that Ransomes & Sims designed and manufactured on their own. Prior to this they had either sold or (later) manufactured Budding and Budding Improved machines.
The lawnmower first appeared in advertisements in The Gardeners Chronicle on 6 May 1861, where it was described as being made "from entirely new patterns" . Despite this, the lawnmower has many similarities to the earlier "Budding" designs, in particular the use of the large diameter rear roller and primary drive gear and the large intermediate gear on the opposite side of the frame.
One interesting feature to note is the position and style of the mounting for the rear roller which is somewhat different to all previous Budding-style lawnmowers.
