Single Column Beam Engine

Like hundreds of foundries and engineering companies in the UK during the 19th century, Ferrabee's Phoenix Ironworks built steam engines. From A Treatise on the Steam-engine in Its Various Applications to Mines..., by John Bourne, 1861, we know they built single column beam engines, such as Ferrabee's double cylinder or compound beam engine.

No full-size Ferrabee beam engines are known to survive. However, this "single column" example of a similar size but with a single cylinder and originally used for pumping water is preserved at the Waterworks Museum in Hereford.

  • A single column beam engine, originally installed at Llanishen Waterworks near Cardiff in 1851, now at Hereford Waterworks Museum.

Built by Harvey & Co, Hayle, Cornwall in 1851 to the design of engineer James Simpson.
