George Wailes and Co Take Over Phoenix Ironworks

George Wailes & Co took over the Phoenix Ironworks, Thrupp, in November 1863.

Prior to this, James Ferrabee & Co. had during 1863 (according to Kellys Trade Directory) been trading as Phoenix Iron Works Company. This is likely to reflect that James Ferrabee was moving his business interests from Thrupp to Port Mill Brimscombe.

According to H.B. Randall, James Ferrabee and his family were living at Phoenix House near to the foundry, but in 1863/4 they moved up the valley to Edgcombe House, Toadsmoor Valley, Brimscombe, nearer to Port Mill.

This cast iron nameplate is preserved at Dunkirk Mill, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire.
