Edwin Budding - being a "machinist" and "jobbing engineer" working in the mills - would have not have had the same social status as the likes of Arnold Merrick. But at the time Budding was working, local "antiquarians" were taking a renewed interest in "mysterious" Roman remains and Budding would have certainly passed through here when coming up from Stroud to visit Cirencester.
